"The Part"-World Premiere

Aisha is apprehensive, not ashamed, of revealing her new acting part to her family. Her father doesn’t make matters better by putting her on the spot to reveal it at a family cookout at their house.

Written in December 2007, The Part finally has its World Premiere December 15, 2009 at the Rotunda Cinematheque (pictured below) in Baltimore.

With the majority of the story set at a cookout, The Part was shot in August 2008.

I expected this film to be finished a long time ago, but because of the yearly revolution of the Earth around the Sun and the tilt of the Earth's axis relative to the plane of revolution we had to halt production. In other words the seasons changed and we couldn't shoot additional shots for the cookout anymore. LOL.

We finally had additional shooting (called pick up shots) during the spring and summer 2009. The cast and crew had a chance to see the film last October at a Private Screening and now the WORLD gets its chance.

Now that we got the shots we needed it’s YOUR chance to see it. Tickets are available ONLINE at

The theater’s exact address is:

Rotunda Cinematheque

Please come out and support the film…independent film…our film. Thank you.

Keeping Score: What's the Score Part 2

More than a year ago I spoke of adding music to The Part in my blog entry What's the score?  I am happy to say that I found some great music for the film, but it was a long road.

I scoured the Internet for royalty free music for the film, but couldn’t find anything that fit. I then reached out to some local Independent music artists that I knew and FINALLY found what I was looking for. It was a tough process, let me explain (and you knew I would).

The Part is a “family drama” and while it’s about love, the music I found was the wrong kind of love. Every song I heard was about falling in love, falling out of love, or making love. All great concepts, but the scenes in The Part had nothing to do with any of those matters.

After I found some music, my Music Supervisor (you can read more about what that is in the blog entry here) had to listen to it and see if it fit in the film and then I negotiated the rights.

We also came across some great songs that just didn’t fit in the film. This is a short film and I really didn’t want it wall-to-wall music. It isn’t a Michael Jackson short film after all.(R.I.P. MJ)

I’m happy to say that we finally did find the music and I would like to showcase the artists who contributed.

The first person that graciously allowed us to use their music was superbly talented Reina Williams.

The next person was the singer extraordinaire Kimia "Chyna Doll" Collins.

We also included a song from our man of many talents Gino’s (the EIC) band Rubberband.

The last person we secured music from also worked on the film Stephen Cooper. In between shots Stephen remarked to me that he was a musician. I told him we were still looking for music and feel free to submit some. He did and we picked one of his songs.

NEXT I will include all of their available info and how you can listen and buy some of their music.

Tag!

Tagline that is. We now have a tagline and a new poster to boot. Both were supplied by our very talented AD (Assistant Director) Jack Sherman.

I've been trying to think of a tagline since I wrote this script, but Jack is the one who came up with what I thought summed it up succinctly. The tagline is below followed by the newest poster.

What if everyone wanted to hear,

what you weren't ready to say?

The Part on the Net

I am happy to announce that we have been selected to receive an IMDb Title Page for our film "The Part." The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) is an online database of information related to movies, actors, television shows, production crew personnel, featured in visual entertainment media. The IMDb website consists of one of the largest accumulation of data about films, television programs, etc. reaching back to each medium's respective beginning.

This means that everyone involved in our production will gain exposure on the most recognized and trafficked movie site in the world - with 57 million unique visitors a month.

There isn’t much on the page yet, but like this blog it will grow as time goes on. Updates have already been submitted and will have to go through the IMDb data managers for verification. In the meantime, enjoy our new Title Page. As IMDb put it "It's the best way to continue to promote and immortalize the work [we] have done."

The Second, our First

Waaay back this time last year, I wrote The Part. Soon after I designed a simple poster to help me actualize my script. I didn’t have a cast to feature in the poster so I had to come up with a concept that would fit the story and since the story involved an acting job, what better way to represent it than by showing a script and this is that poster.

So that was our first and below is our second, but it’s also the first. Confused? Bear with me there is a method to my madness. So how can our second be our first? This is our second poster, but the FIRST to feature our cast. Our man of many talents Gino designed the poster with the photos I picked. There will probably be more posters to come, but this is the first with our great cast.

Director's Cut-Edit 5: Our Transition Team

FROM THE OFFICE OF
THE PRESIDENT OF
'NOTHER BROTHER ENTERTAINMENT
Last Sunday, November 16, 2008, we started filming some of our transitions. In editing we saw that we needed some stuff to help transition from one scene to another. We even had some actors come back to film new stuff. What exactly was that stuff? We’re hoping you won’t be able to tell until we tell you. The point of going back and filming additional material and scenes is to make it look like it was all filmed together and we hope we accomplished that. So who was on our “transition team”? Me and the Second Unit Director.

Gino’s been promoted yall. He’s now not only the editor (or EIC) he’s also now the Second Unit Director and Music Supervisor.

The job of Music Supervisor is both creative and logistic; music supervisors select music and negotiate usage licenses. Music supervisors play diverse roles in the creative process of films, helping to emphasize storylines, emotion, time period and cultural location. Gino will help me select the music and I'll negotiate usage licenses. I wanted Gino to be Music Supervisor because he’s a musician and has his own rock band (shout out to Rubberband. That’s him on bass to the right.). As a musician he has an ear for music and knows about keys and chords whereas I just know what sounds good.

As far as his other new title, a vital task for the second unit is to shoot inserts and B-roll (supplemental or alternate footage). Sometimes, and as it is THIS time, the editor will take charge of a second unit to film B-roll or inserts as he will know what footage he is missing. Gino could have easily have been my DP (Director of Photography) because he has a great eye for filming too.

Like myself Gino is an artist and a man of many talents, I guess that's why we get along so well. His artistry in music and eye for visual art is what makes him an excellent editor. Anyone can pick up an instrument, but it takes an artist to make it sound good.
